The Benefits of Hiring a Professional for Carpet Removal

Here are 4 reasons you may want to consider hiring Trash and Stash to help with your carpet removal.

  1. Convenience: Removing carpet is labor intensive and time consuming. It’s physically demanding (the older we get the lower the ground gets). You’ll also need a few specialized tools to complete the job (knee pads, carpet knife and staple remover) which you may need to buy or borrow.
  2. Safety: Carpet removal is labor intensive. It’s a lot of kneeling, bending and lifting. And that’s before you factor in the need to use sharp blades and blunt tools.
  3. Eco- Friendly Disposal: There are lots of ways to dump of dispose of materials and items we no longer. Some disposal methods are environmentally friendly and others aren’t. We have the relationship, resources and knowledge do dispose of carpets, rugs and pads in the most environmentally responsible way possible.
  4. Cost Effective: Hiring us may be more cost effective than having your flooring contractor haul the material and may not cost much more (if any) than doing it yourself. Especially when you factor in the value of your time. Other hard costs associated with DIY carpet removal includes tools, truck/ equipment rental and disposal fees.

9 Steps For DIY Carpet Removal

Removing and then disposing of carpet on your own is hard work. It’s labor intensive and takes time and effort. If you’re ready to take on this task, here are 9 steps to get started.

  1. Prepare the area: Remove any furniture, objects or obstacles out of the room. Vacuum the carpet and remove dirt and debris before getting started.
  2. Remove the baseboards: Use a prybar and hammer to gently remove the baseboards around the perimeter of the room.
  3. Cut the carpet: Use a utility knife to cut the carpet into manageable sections (small enough that you can roll and carry).

4. Remove the carpet: Use pliers to grip a corner of the carpet and pull it up. Slowly and carefully. Roll as you go.

5. Remove the tack strips: Tack strips are located around the perimeter of the room or at stairs and thresholds. Tack strips hold the carpet in place. Use a prybar to carefully remove the tack strips. They’re sharp so watch out!

6. Remove the padding: Under the carpet there may be a layer of padding. Like the carpet, use a utility knife to cut the padding into sections. Roll up and remove. Be careful not to cut too deep to damage the sub- floor.

7. Clean Up: Sweep or vacuum any remaining dirt and debris.

8. Separate the materials: Roll up and separate any reusable carpet sections. Then roll up the unsalvageable carpet, the padding and bag the tack strips.

9. Dispose: Check with your local trash service to see if they will pick up your carpet from the curb (if not, we offer a 10% discount for curbside junk removal so you can save some money on carpet disposal if you’re willing to do the work). Otherwise, load the old carpet up and haul off to your local dump or recycling center.
